Finding a 24-hour veterinarian can be difficult. Most veterinary office hours are nine to five. The main problem with this is the fact that pets do not typically run on a nine to five schedule when they get sick. If you are out for a late night walk with your dog, and he chases after a squirrel and collapses and has difficulty breathing, you need an emergency vet now. If your cat finds a scrap of food after dinner, and it does not agree with them, you need an emergency vet now. As much as we would like to be able to predict and control our pet’s emergencies, life is crazy and unpredictable. We know you love your pets and want them to get the best care in the world, so why not take them to the best 24-hour emergency vet in Kernersville?

Know your ABC’s for a pet medical emergency
- Airway: Make sure that your pet’s chest is rising and falling and check for proper rhythm as well. Listen closely to hear that they have a clear airway and are getting the oxygen that they need. If your pet is unconscious, you need to check for obstruction of the airway by gently pulling on the tip of their tongue. If you meet resistance, immediately stop: this means that your pet is not actually unconscious and may try to bite you out of confusion or fear. If your pet is unconscious, do a finger sweep of their mouth to get rid of any obstructions and excess saliva. If your pet is seizing, do not put your fingers near its mouth. A seizing pet will usually start to breathe on their own. If you find that there is no obstruction of the airway, and they are not having a problem breathing, continue on to step B.
- Breathing and Bleeding: Once you know that your pet’s airways are clear, and there are still no signs of breathing, begin administering CPR. We recommend that you begin and continue administering CPR until you reach our emergency vet clinic to give your pet the best chances of recovery. If there is bleeding, find something to bandage the wound as best as possible. Make sure the bandages are clean to prevent any possible infection and bring your pet to our clinic where we can sterilize the wound and give the medical attention necessary to stop the bleeding.
- Cardiovascular: Find your pet’s heartbeat. Place your ear close to their chest and make sure their heart is beating. If not, first check to see if your pet’s gums are white: this means that your pet is in shock or is experiencing blood loss internally. No matter the shade of the gums, begin to administer CPR and continue until you have reached our clinic. The on-call vet will be there to take over; be sure to offer up any information, including gum colors, to help assist the vet in helping your pet get the proper care immediately. You know your pet better than anyone, and any details you have may help.
